Script & Lettering Tattoos
Script and lettering tattoos turn words, names, dates and meaningful phrases into permanent artwork. Some designs are deeply personal, while others are chosen simply because of the appearance of the lettering itself.
The style covers a wide range of typography, from delicate cursive writing and fine line script to bold Gothic lettering, traditional lettering, handwritten designs and decorative calligraphy.
What makes script & lettering tattoos different?
With lettering tattoos, the smallest details can make a big difference.
The shape of each letter, the spacing between characters and the thickness of the lines all affect how readable the tattoo will be once healed.
Fonts that look beautiful on a screen or piece of paper don't always translate perfectly onto skin. Very thin strokes, tightly connected letters and tiny spaces may become less distinct over time.
For this reason, your artist might recommend adjusting the lettering, increasing the size or changing certain details to give the design a better chance of remaining legible.
Custom lettering can also be created to match a particular mood, whether that's elegant, bold, gothic or minimal.
Choosing the right design and placement
Placement plays an important role in lettering tattoos. The forearm, collarbone, ribs, upper arm and back are popular areas, depending on the length and layout of the text.
It's also worth checking spelling, punctuation and translations carefully before your appointment, particularly when using another language.
At Dark Neon in Northcliff, Johannesburg, our artists can help you select or customise lettering that suits your idea.
